What Can You Do to Be Sun Smart?

Protect yourself from the sunlight's damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays. This includes the following:
  • Apply a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, every day (during winter months as well)
  • Wear protective clothing, including a hat and sunglasses
  • Avoid lying in the sun or using tanning devices
  • Minimize sun exposure especially during the summer and particularly between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Be Smart About Being in the Sun: UV Alert Bracelets

Picture
There is a product out in the market that actually tells you when you should head back into the shade. Now, that IS smart!

UVSunSense, a company out of New Jersey, makes UV alert bracelets. How does this technology work? Basically, the bracelet, made with a sun-reactive dye, tells the wearer when to reapply sunscreen and/or return to the shade by turning different colors.

The bracelets are initially white when taken out of the package and turns bright purple when exposed to sunlight. When the band turns light lavender, it's time to reapply sunscreen. When the band turns light yellow, it's time to get out of the sun! VERY smart indeed!

Read more about this product in a June 2010 Wall Street Journal article: When to Come in From the Sun.

Melanoma Miles for Mike is selling the UV alert bracelets on this website for $10 per package (tax + shipping within the lower 48 included).

Bracelets will be at a reduced price of $8/package at our 7th Anniversary Run/Walk event on April 27th in Washington, MO.
(Proceeds from both locations will go to melanoma research.)

Each package contains seven (7) one-time-use bracelets.

Buy some now in time for the Run/Walk on April 27th! Or for those sunny spring & summer days.
